Monday 9th March The Draughtsman's Contract (1982)
The Draughtsmans Contract (1982), Peter Greenaway’s witty, stylish and erotic English country house murder mystery. In 17th century Wiltshire, an ambitious young draughtsman is commissioned by the wife of a wealthy businessman to produce drawings of their house, in return for money and more..! Causing a stir on first release forty-four years ago, it will be a pleasure to revisit this elegant film.
With extravagant costumes, plot mystery, wicked dialogue and a mesmerising score from Michael Nyman, Greenaway’s film is a treat for all senses. Monday 11th May Shirley: Visions of Reality (2013)
A series of snapshots from the life of a fictional actress named Shirley serves to weave together thirteen paintings by Edward Hopper (e.g. “Office at Night”, “Western Motel”, “Usherette”, “A Woman in the Sun”) into a fascinating synthesis of painting and film, personal and political history. Each station in Shirley’s professional and private life from the 1930s to 1960s is precisely dated: It is always August 28/29 of the year in question, as the locations vary from Paris to New York to Cape Cod.
