Lone Star
Renowned indie filmmaker John Sayles’ thoughtful and complex film about the old and the new west. In a nuanced take on the Mexican/Texas border, a sheriff investigates the discovery of a long-buried skeleton with a lone-star badge. With themes of racial and cultural tension, and of identity and reconciliation, this is classic Sayles territory.

The President’s Cake
A captivating story from Iraqi director Hasan Hadi of a young girl charged with baking a cake in honour of President Sadam Hussein’s birthday. The film focuses on the innocence of the youngster against a backdrop of a totalitarian regime, and how resilience and humour of people helps them survive the harsh realities around them.

The Stranger
Director Francois Ozon’s take on Camus’ Novella of 1942, L’Etranger is beautifully shot in black and white. The story follows a young clerk In Algiers emotionally detached after the death of his mother and (gratuitously?) murders a stranger. A superb sense of period and place prevails.

In the Civil War in Nepal two young boys try to recover their hen which had been sold unbeknown to them. Beautifully shot, lost innocence and friendship across social divides and resilience in the face of internecine warfare permeate the story.

An intimate exploration of family memories and relationships from director Joachim Trier. A complex family web between an ageing film director and his 2 daughters as he tries to resurrect his career with an autobiographical film starring his eldest daughter. The film won Best International Feature at the 2026 Oscars.

My Favourite Cake
In a moving story of love, loss and loneliness in old age, 70 year-old Mahin is determined to meet a man. Joint Iranian directors overcame attempts by the repressive regime to prevent the film’s distribution. The film’s gentle humanity is a compelling rebuke to their repressive regime.
