‘Return to Seoul’ (2023), the story of Freddie, a young woman given up for adoption at birth by her struggling Korean family, now living in France. Aged 25, she visits Seoul for the first time to reconnect with her biological parents and the culture she left behind. Reconciliation with her past however, proves far from straightforward. This spirited, stimulating film is a refreshingly authentic story of a young woman’s search for identity. ‘Emotional and absorbing’
The Guardian,

‘Electric, powerful, soul-searching’ Little White Lies magazine.

A: Very powerful. (A)    Beautiful, moving portrayal of the emotions involved! (A)     Excellent & heartfelt emotionally charged film with eventful turns – moments (A)   What an amazing performance by ‘Freddie’; totally engrossed! (A)   Psychologically complex & astute. Riveting central performance. (A)    The bench and the shoes…. Was most moving (A)   Exceptional in every respect; chilling, but somehow very warming. (A)     Brilliant – so powerful. (A)  Wow, such an immense issue, well depicted by a sad and tragic Freddie. (A)      Great film. (A)     Excellent, music also great. (A)

B: International adoption–a whole new level of how to add pain to a difficult situation. (B)  Interesting window into another world (B) Fascinating for the first hour, irritating in the second. But great acting. (B)   Too long, unsympathetic protagonist – worth watching & thought-provoking. (B)    She was not likeable but I felt for her struggles. Loved Korea & working out the story in 3 languages. (B)

C: Very interesting in many parts. The acting levels varied too much from superb to terrible Pleased to have seen it. (C) Started very promising but became increasingly disjointed & difficult to follow. Also probably about ¼ hour too long. (C)

Some patchy acting but interesting characters and great music (C)       Not a likeable person (C)

D: Simply sad. Interesting glimpses of Seoul life. (D)

E: Interesting to see Korea but poor plotting and main character poorly drawn.

I don’t know what I‘m supposed to make of this? That adopted into different culture didn’t work for her.  Sad that the longed-for meeting with her mother went nowhere. (not graded)
